Fisking Me Softly

07 January 2010 @ 21:24

As mentioned before, Stacy’s out on the Left Coast doing gonzo reporting on the BCS Bowl, so I guess he must be forgiven for having published such a perfunctory Fisking of David Brooks’s latest column:

Speaking of vampires and other things that suck worse than Avatar, David Brooks’ column yesterday was a backhanded putdown of the Tea Party movement, as Malkin notes.

Because I have covered the Tea Party movement extensively, what struck me about Brooks’ column was the absolute absence of reporting. Not a single Tea Party source was interviewed for his column. Brooks is so busy admiring the crease of Obama’s pants leg, he can’t find time to go to a rally and talk to people like Jenny Beth Martin, Rhonda Lee Welsch, Andrea Shea King and Barbara Espinosa.

Reporting isn’t brain surgery, as Jimmie Bise likes to say, but it’s apparently beneath Brooks’ pay-grade….

Good—after all, he is a damn fine writer—but we’ve come to expect more out of the capo di tutti capi of Fiskers.

Luckily, Paco has picked-up the baton and run with it, and he is smooth operator, slicing David Chauncey Gardiner Brooks with a subtle smile and much charm.  A highlight:

David Brooks’ latest op-ed piece is another mish-mash consisting of a few undeniable facts covered in self-serving class-warfare sauce. I think this is the point where he really goes wrong: “The public is not only shifting from left to right. Every single idea associated with the educated class has grown more unpopular over the past year [emphasis mine].” This is by way of a preamble to his description of the Tea Party movement, which he characterizes as “a large, fractious confederation of Americans who are defined by what they are against.” Oh, and just to keep the record straight, Brooks is “not a fan of this movement” – which will come as a surprise to precisely no one, since Brooks is always careful to wipe his shoes before entering that shrine to liberal prejudices, the New York Times.

Pour yourself a Maker’s Mark and read the rest here.
