Pathetic
It appears that Patrick ‘Patches’ Kennedy is off his meds again.
Yesterday on the floor of the House, he launched into a rant that was very unsettling to watch. From where I am right now I can’t embed the video, but Stacy McCain has it here. Here’s the transcript of part of it, but you really should view it otherwise you won’t see how out of control Kennedy was:
If anybody wants to know where cynicism is, cynicism is that there’s one, two press people in this gallery. We’re talking about Eric Massa 24-7 on the TV, we’re talking about war and peace, $3 billion, 1,000 lives and no press? No press. You want to know why the American public is fit? They’re fit because they’re not seeing their Congress do the work that they’re sent to do. It’s because the press, the press of the United States is not covering the most significant issue of national importance and that’s the laying of lives down in the nation for the service of our country. It’s despicable, the national press corps right now.
I despise the Kennedy family. I really really really really loathe everything about them and everyone of them. If I were to wake up tomorrow in a world without them being in it, I would be a happy man. They have contributed nothing positive to America.
But, it’s clear that Patches is suffering from a severe mental illness and should be confined to an institution so he can get some serious help. This performance was sad and pitiful in the extreme.
Is there no one in that godforsaken, narcissistic, and pathetic family who cares enough about the man-boy to help him? To get him off the public stage and to some place private where he can possibly get the care he needs?
What a goddamn horrible family.

Oh dear.
Now, I can understand (and actually do endorse) the criticism of America and the press to be focusing on some sleazy Congressman’s actions when there is a war and when 20% of the country is unemployed or underemployed.
I’m sure that there are people with mental illnesses who can do a great job in politics, provided that their conditions are under control – just as people with any illness, properly controlled, can do any job. (Hopefully, no one would suggest that CJ Roberts retire simply because he’s had a few seizures.)
But what was really sad to see was the way that Kennedy acted when he said those things. He wasn’t sitting there, making an impassioned speech about keeping our priorities in line; he was hardly coherent.
The other question: where are his colleagues? If his family is going to do their Hyannis compound Camelot thing and ignore the guy, why aren’t colleagues stepping up to him and helping him out? Crikey.
Great question.
Wouldn’t want to seem “judgmental” now, would they. “Camelot” was always a house of cards, an illusion continued by delusional people…and Congress has become not so different.
People with severe mental illnesses may be capable of doing any job – and many do – when properly medicated AND following the directions for their treatments. But a “special” little egomaniac would, I believe, begin to feel a bit better and stop taking the things that help…and so become incapable. What do they do while incapable? How about surfing, or driving, or taking care of children, or cooking, or passing legislation that wrests a huge tax increase from already strapped Americans?
We can’t legislate THEM into institutions or force them to take meds any more than we can do so to the mentally ill who inhabit the city homeless mission.
But we certainly shouldn’t be REELECTING ’em.
