‘FBI Arrests Tea Party-Connected Terrorists In Mass.’ [Updated Below]

13 May 2010 @ 14:30

Just kidding*…actually…

From CBS News [via Stacy McCain and DaTechguy]:

Three people were in federal custody after law enforcement conducted raids in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey in connection with the failed Times Square bombing investigation, officials said.

Two of those arrested have a “direct connection” to bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad, according to a law enforcement official.

The searches were the product of evidence gathered in the investigation into Shahzad’s alleged bombing attempt two weeks ago, but there was “no known immediate threat to the public or any active plot against the United States,” FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said.

All three people are being held on alleged immigration violations, according to Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd.

The men are from Pakistan, said another law enforcement official familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to release details.

That official said one of the men had overstayed his visa. The government had already begun proceedings to remove the other man from the country; he was awaiting a ruling from an immigration court.

A home in Watertown, Mass., a suburb about 10 miles west of Boston, was stormed in the early morning. Barbara Lacerra told CBS station WBZ-TV she saw the raid unfold from her home nearby at about 5:45 a.m.

A Mobil gas station in Brookline, another Boston suburb, also was raided. The entrances and exits to the station were cordoned off by yellow tape, and FBI agents were going in and out of the building. Agents also searched a silver Honda in the parking lot, removing items from the vehicle and loading material into a sports utility vehicle.

The Honda’s license plate was linked to the address in the Watertown raid, WBZ reports.

Raids also were conducted Thursday on New York’s Long Island, where conflicting reports emerged regarding possible arrests. A source told CBS station WCBS in New York that two people were detained in the towns of Shirley and Centereach in Suffolk County.

But a law enforcement official told the Associated Press that no arrests were made in New York, despite search warrants being executed.

According to WCBS, the FBI was looking to arrest seven people across the Northeast in connection with the investigation.

Special Agent J.J. Klaver of the FBI in Philadelphia says agents are at locations in Camden, New Jersey, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, following up on leads that he declined to specify.

-Stacy McCain has been regularly updating the story and is in regular contact with DaTechguy who is on the scene with his camera [Go Pete!].  A highlight:

Residents in the neighborhood tell Da Tech Guy they were awakened this morning by the sound of helicopters overhead. FBI agents have been seen taking papers and computers out of 39 Waverly, and have reportedly set up a temporary headquarters in the basement cafeteria of the Watertown Housing Authority (55 Waverly Ave.).

The boarding house at 39 Waverly is owned by absentee landlords and most people in the neighborhood don’t know their neighbors. That might make it “a perfect place” for would-be terrorists to keep a low profile, as one resident told Da Tech Guy, who is continuing to interview residents, police and other people on the scene. He will be filing photos and video later today.

-Here’s DaTechguy’s initial report before he jumped in his car and headed to Watertown, Massachusetts.

-Keep checking back at Stacy’s joint and later at DaTechguy’s place for updates and photos/videos.

The Boston Herald’s story is here.

From Herald Editor and blogger Jules Crittenden:

Regarding the latest in Boston, HotAir’s monitoring. JammieWearingFool hopes they remembered to Mirandize. Other McCain is on the phone with Da Tech Guy on the scene. That’s some dynamic newsblogging. I hope he remembered to change out of his pajamas.

If DTG didn’t, I hope somebody snaps his picture.

UPDATE at 1649…

-Stacy McCain, in a separate posting, publishes Fizzle in the Snizzle’s…er…Faisal Shahzad’s immigration history [WARNING: take your blood pressure pills before reading] and asks the QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Will Terrorists Boycott Arizona?

One can only hope they do; those folks have enough problems to deal with.

Also: big tip of the fedora to fedora-wearing Stacy for linking to this post.

There was not one sentence in the paragraph about the Tea Party, so how did they end up in the title?

OK I barely see the just kidding but that kind of nonsenses just feeds the frenzy.

Danny, only a nit wit would think that “alleged” Time Square car bomber Faisal Shahzad is a “right-wing-radical” Tea Party member, though that is the general story Bloomberg was going with, and announcing on national television. But then he is, in fact, a nit wit, and for sharing with us his two cents worth he apparently owes us all twenty-five.

What then, you must ask yourself, are the mysterious motives of one Bob Belevedere? Is he looking to draw in left leaners, reaching out the hand of compassion and giving them the opportunity to read a thoughtful and articulate post? Is it his outrageous sense of humor? Perhaps he is rubbing it in the eye of the main stream media, who were hell bent on pinning the whole affair on the Tea Party, as Bill Clinton and Barrack ‘Hush Puppy’ Obama had set the stage for?

My guess….another shameless attempt to grab as much internet traffic as possible with an outrageous and eye catching banner post.

I am a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma with a chewy center.

You realize, of course Bob, that this is totally flying in the face of the story we were all presented and reassured with by our betters in government and media, that this guy was a lone wolf, an amateur, a non-threat, a man from Connecticut who had lost his mortgage and failed at the American dream when greedy Wall Street types sent him to this ill fate as the finance markets all went to hell and a hand basket in ’08.

    You’re off narrative, Belvedere!

Off narrative, off base, off color, off the cuff, off center, off putting, off the wall….I’m a spray can of it and no mosquito will get within a thousand feet of me.
