Leftists And The Big Denial

26 February 2014 @ 21:41

No, I’m not talking about the fact that to embrace Leftism one must deny Reality, refuse to accept Life as it is.  I prefer to think of this kind of Denial as The Root Denial — the self-deception that is absolutely necessary  to engage in if a person is going to be able to be a Leftist.

The biggest Denial the Modern Left has imposed on itself is that it is in no way connected at all with Fascism, generally, and Nazism, specifically.

In his latest column, Daniel Hannan reveals Truths that the Left refuses to hear and reacts violently to when confronted with them.

A highlight [tip of the fedora to Alberto Piergiorgi via Robot J. McCarthy]:

On 16 June 1941, as Hitler readied his forces for Operation Barbarossa, Josef Goebbels looked forward to the new order that the Nazis would impose on a conquered Russia. There would be no come-back, he wrote, for capitalists nor priests nor Tsars. Rather, in the place of debased, Jewish Bolshevism, the Wehrmacht would deliver “der echte Sozialismus”: real socialism.

Goebbels never doubted that he was a socialist. He understood Nazism to be a better and more plausible form of socialism than that propagated by Lenin. Instead of spreading itself across different nations, it would operate within the unit of the Volk.

So total is the cultural victory of the modern Left that the merely to recount this fact is jarring. But few at the time would have found it especially contentious. As George Watson put it in The Lost Literature of Socialism:

It is now clear beyond all reasonable doubt that Hitler and his associates believed they were socialists, and that others, including democratic socialists, thought so too.

The clue is in the name. Subsequent generations of Leftists have tried to explain away the awkward nomenclature of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party as either a cynical PR stunt or an embarrassing coincidence. In fact, the name meant what it said.

Hitler told Hermann Rauschning, a Prussian who briefly worked for the Nazis before rejecting them and fleeing the country, that he had admired much of the thinking of the revolutionaries he had known as a young man; but he felt that they had been talkers, not doers. “I have put into practice what these peddlers and pen pushers have timidly begun,” he boasted, adding that “the whole of National Socialism” was “based on Marx”.

While Nazism was based on Marxism and, to a smaller degree, Leninism, Hitler [taking a cue from Mussolini] devised a, shall we say, less disruptive version:

Marx’s error, Hitler believed, had been to foster class war instead of national unity – to set workers against industrialists instead of conscripting both groups into a corporatist order. His aim, he told his economic adviser, Otto Wagener, was to “convert the German Volk to socialism without simply killing off the old individualists” – by which he meant the bankers and factory owners who could, he thought, serve socialism better by generating revenue for the state. “What Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism failed to accomplish,” he told Wagener, “we shall be in a position to achieve.”

Hitler saw his way [aka: Fascism] as more practical and easier to achieve because it involved compromising the ‘old indvidualists’.  Using a mixture of threats and incentives that appealed to the base desires of the big businessmen, Hitler got them to join him in the Corporatist Order he was fashioning.  He made them feel better about what they and the workers and Intelligentsia were doing by giving them cover for their actions in a cloak made of German Pride.

What Hitler was successful in doing, the Left In America is seeking to do here now.  ‘Barack Hussein Obama’ and his minions have forged successful alliances with Unions, the Unproductive Class, and Big Business, so that the four are now joined in an offensive, the goal of which is to fundamentally transform The United States into a Fascist Regime.  [Notice, by the way, that in both the Hitler and ‘Obama’ schemes, the Middle Class – what I like to call the Productive Class – are not invited, but are subject to unrelenting harassments and malevolent intimidations.]

As you can well imagine, the Left is not very happy when they are shown to be the heirs of the Facistas in Italy and the National Socialists in Germany.  This wounds them even more deeply because they have been told their whole lives that Fascism is a Far-Right Ideology.

As Mr. Hannan points out:

The idea that Nazism is a more extreme form of conservatism has insinuated its way into popular culture. You hear it, not only when spotty students yell “fascist” at Tories, but when pundits talk of revolutionary anti-capitalist parties, such as the BNP and Golden Dawn, as “far Right”.

What is it based on, this connection? Little beyond a jejune sense that Left-wing means compassionate and Right-wing means nasty and fascists are nasty. When written down like that, the notion sounds idiotic, but think of the groups around the world that the BBC, for example, calls “Right-wing”: the Taliban, who want communal ownership of goods; the Iranian revolutionaries, who abolished the monarchy, seized industries and destroyed the middle class; Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who pined for Stalinism. The “Nazis-were-far-Right” shtick is a symptom of the wider notion that “Right-wing” is a synonym for “baddie”.

Mr. Hannan gets it partially right, but he forgets the bigger motivation for the spreading of this Big Lie: that the Left wants to cleanse from our knowledge of History that they enthusiastically supported the Fascists up until Hitler invaded The Soviet Union.  They want us to forget their gushing, at times like giddy schoolgirls, over Hitler and Mussolini.  Most especially they want us to forget their support for Eugenics, the purifying of race pool, and other perverse ideas.

It was and has always been Leftists who have supported such Evil ideas and the hideous schemes that have arisen out of them.

For much too long, we have allowed the Left to perpetuate the Big Fascist Lie in service of their Big Denial.

They have controlled the Narrative and this must end if we are to have any hope of defeating them.

Leftism is the Ideology of Evil and it must be destroyed utterly.

Exactly. Adolf and Benito were perfectly respectable types for quite a while. Note that in “Brave New World” a major character is “Benito Hoover,” furthering my belief that Huxley was writing a partial satire of his own time.

Interesting you bring that up – I am about to read that novel again for the first time in thirty years.

Not to pick nits, but we are talking about precision of language here: “Fascism” was peculiar to Italy of the early-to-mid 20th c. (with crazy hats, stylish uniforms, lots of Latin talking-with-hands, etc) and “Nazism” was peculiar to Germany of the same period (precise saluting, utilitarian uniforms, efficient disposal of undesirables, etc, etc) and thus not interchangeable. In fact, I don’t think they’re even applicable to any group or nationality in modern times (excepting the small groups of modern kooks who are nostalgic for them. Even in those cases, if you look at people who call themselves Neo-Nazis, for example, they’re really more Hitlerist than Nazi).

“Socialist” even “Marxist” are much more accurate terms and if we’re going to call them bad people (which they are), “authoritarian” is quite accurate too.

BTW, not wanting to be imprecise myself, I had to check around to see other people’s opinions about what “fascist” means and, naturally, looking at Wikipedia I saw this:

“Influenced by national syndicalism, the first fascist movements emerged in Italy around World War I, combining more typically right-wing positions with elements of left-wing politics, in opposition to communism, socialism, liberal democracy and traditional conservatism.”

Oh, okay…so, according to them, “Nazism” (National Socialism) is a type of fascism, yet it’s more rightist than leftist.

And another thing! The only way in which Fascists were opposed to Communists and Socialists is the same way in which varying degrees of Socialists oppose each other today: they don’t think the other guy is implementing Socialism/Marxism right and they’re not opposed to using a gun to the head to get the other guy to see things his way. (For a contemporary real-world example of the last, see: “Armed [Russian men sent by Vladimir Putin] seize two airports in Ukraine’s Crimea, Russia denies involvement [in a Family Circus-style ‘Not Me’ kinda way]”.)
